Terms of Service
Last updated: July 16, 2026
1. Acceptance of Terms
By accessing and using the Oil Price API service ("Service"), you accept and agree to be bound by the terms and provision of this agreement.
2. Description of Service
Oil Price API provides timestamped oil and energy price data through our REST API. The service includes access to the latest available prices, historical data, and related market information.
3. Data Provenance & Rights
Oil Price API is a data collection and delivery service. We aggregate commodity price information from publicly available sources — government agencies (such as the U.S. Energy Information Administration and national energy regulators) and published market reporting — then normalize it and deliver it through a single, reliable API.
What we sell is access, not the numbers themselves. Market prices are facts, and no one owns a fact. Our value is the work around them: continuous collection, normalization across sources, historical depth, uptime, and a developer experience that means you never have to build a data pipeline yourself.
We grant no rights in the data. None, in any form. We claim no ownership of the underlying facts, and we convey no rights in them to you. We are not a party to any exchange or price-reporting agency and we hold no licence from any upstream source, so we are not in a position to authorize, permit, or forbid your use of the data — at any plan tier, for any fee. This is not a restriction we have chosen. It is a description of what we are. Where you stand on a given series depends on that series' source and its terms, never on a permission from us.
- What the service is for: use inside your own organization — applications, dashboards, pricing models, analysis, and internal reporting. That is what the API is built and priced for, and it is the use that raises no question of rights in the first place.
- Third-party-sourced series: LBMA metals fixings, exchange futures, ICE / EU carbon and similar. We hold no redistribution or public-display rights in these and cannot convey any. No agreement with us, at any tier, can authorize you to redistribute or publicly display them. If your use case needs those rights, they come from the originating publisher.
- Government-sourced series: data from government agencies (identified in our documentation) is in the public domain. That status comes from the source, not from us — we issue no permission over it, and none is needed from us. Attribute the originating agency.
- What we do restrict: our service, not the facts. Do not share, resell, or publish your API key; do not scrape, clone, or reverse-engineer the API to stand up a competing delivery service. Those limits protect the pipeline we built, which is the thing you are actually paying for.
- What we are not: Oil Price API is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or a licensed distributor of any exchange or price-reporting agency. Our data is provided for informational purposes. It is not suitable for use as a settlement price, contract benchmark, or official record — for those purposes, use the official source directly.
4. API Usage
You agree to use the API in accordance with the following guidelines:
- Respect rate limits as specified in your plan
- Do not attempt to circumvent security measures
- Use the API for legitimate business purposes only
- Do not redistribute or resell API data. We hold no redistribution rights in third-party-sourced series and cannot convey any — see §3.
5. Account Responsibilities
You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your API keys and account credentials. You agree to notify us immediately of any unauthorized use of your account.
6. Data Accuracy
While we strive to provide accurate and up-to-date information, we make no warranties regarding the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of the data provided through our API.
The Service is provided for informational and operational use only. It is not investment, trading, tax, legal, accounting, or financial advice, and it is not a substitute for official settlement prices, price-reporting-agency publications, exchange data, or your own professional judgment. You are responsible for independently validating any data before using it in trading, settlement, invoicing, public display, redistribution, or other high-impact workflows.
7. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Oil Price API and Metiri Labs LLC will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages; lost profits; lost revenue; lost data; business interruption; trading losses; settlement losses; procurement losses; or claims arising from reliance on inaccurate, stale, delayed, incomplete, unavailable, or unavailable-for-rights data.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, our aggregate liability for all claims relating to the Service is limited to the fees you paid us for the Service during the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim, or USD $100 if you used a free plan.
8. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Oil Price API, Metiri Labs LLC, and our officers, employees, contractors, and service providers from claims, losses, liabilities, damages, costs, and expenses arising from your use of the Service, your breach of these Terms, your violation of law, your misuse or redistribution of data, or your infringement of another party's rights.
9. Termination
We reserve the right to terminate or suspend your account and access to the service at our sole discretion, without prior notice, for conduct that we believe violates these Terms of Service.
10. Changes to Terms
We reserve the right to modify these terms at any time. We will notify users of significant changes via email or through our service announcements.
11. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any dispute that cannot be resolved informally will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Delaware, unless applicable law requires a different forum.
12. Related Policies
These Terms incorporate our Data Usage Policy and Privacy Policy. Enterprise support targets, custom service levels, and data protection terms apply only when they are included in a signed order form or written agreement.
